Everything you need to know about #DoctorWho for Season 8

    • I have toiled with the notion of fear.. I think it is a thing of beauty. Certainly, it is central to human nature or at least our psychology and motivations.

I think about the portrayal of heroes as fearless, perhaps superhuman characters and it makes me face palm a bit. Fear helps us reach new heights. Fear motivates us to grow and connect with others. Being fearless, then, could be seen as inhuman.

True courage is not being devoid of fear, it is identifying and facing fear. Perhaps that is what they are setting up for the Doctor? To me, that is beautiful. Understanding fear and really coming to terms with it breeds compassion, awareness, and appreciation of a whole new caliber. Is that not beauty? When we fear, we can stop to take a moment to take things in. We reflect, we observe, we become more in sync with our true selves.. That is, if we do not allow that fear to shut us down.

Fear of the dark or silence, which go hand in hand in my mind, reflects a most basic human need: the need for warmth. Being alone, cold, isolated.. That is scary to me. I can’t think of any living being who could thrive, not just survive, alone.

The Doctor did something brave in revealing his deep-seated fear of the dark. Sure, he required some hand holding but he still go there. It was a beautiful revelation but now he needs to really face the fear.

I’d say the focus on fear highlights just how lonely and distraught the Doctor really is. He’s a tragic hero. Let’s just hope he does not wallow in that tragedy. That pain has to be transformed into strength and deeper, warmer human connections.

This is where the companion-Doctor dynamic is so crucial. We need to see that empathetic, symbiotic relationship at work. We have come to expect that from the series. They really need to step things up now.

I can relate to the Doctor. I try not to allow the darkness or silence to creep up on me or drown me. I like to listen to podcasts or music while I work. Even as I attempt sleep, I enjoy a little white noise. It is good to enjoy the silence and unplug sometimes. Meditation is huge.. But one can’t allow regret and doubts to take over during those moments.

Maybe the Doctor is avoiding his own regrets, fears, and doubts.. Perhaps that is why the darkness had him so uneasy. Think about the Silence, one of the Doctor’s greatest foes.. They personify that emptiness and unrest that comes along with darkness and silence.

There’s something there… What do you all think?

    • Looking forward to timey wimey episode 5

      • Me neither, Gabriela! Still much more prep and testing to do. It’s gonna be a busy night! I’m fearful yet excited and optimistic!

(See what I did there? *wink*)

The Doctor has unleashed a shiny, murderous and stalwart champion unto the universe.

    What was the Doctor thinking?

Even the “enlightened” Clara didn’t give a second thought to Rusty rolling off into the sunset. With weapon systems, fully charged.

    Timey-Wimey Tea Time Recap

This episode Yomar Lopez and Stan Faryna go deeper – they gush over the YouTube comments for Timey-Wimey Tea Time, they contemplate beauty, they read some poetry, and, heck yes, they rock.

Good news: Derrick Hopkins of All Games is bringing the Timey-Wimey Tea Time to the big league with a hot Saturday slot try out.

All Games is an online, game community and podcast network founded by Scot Rubin. In fact, All Games is a pioneer podcast network and has a huge audience for it’s long list of successful podcasts including Video Game Outsiders, Zombie Cast, The B team, Dead Pixel Live, Agents of Shield, Knuckleballer Radio, and many more.  We’re excited and fueled by the momentum of the rail gun action. But we can’t do this without you, your love, or your fantastic support.

Yomar Lopez (aka Yogizilla) does some explaining. About the Doctor. About where we are in Doctor Who Series 8. About Episode Two, Into The Dalek.

Doctor Who is a 50 year + , BBC, sci-fi television series about a funny, little man that travels all of time and space. With a little help from his – mostly earthy- companions. The Doctor, that’s his name, has worn more than a few faces – thirteen to be exact – over the years, but regardless of the face or accessories (scarf, bow tie, ref fez, robotic dog, etcetera), the Doctor remains the same loveable and intelligent alien-man, popping about in a wheezing, blue, police call box, called the TARDIS.  The TARDIS is a time machine. A space ship. And almost a world unto itself. Hey, it’s bigger on the inside!

In Series 8, The Doctor is not the Doctor. But he is! This is the (arguably) twelfth regeneration. He’s no longer a hipster-ish, floppy-haired boy toy as he was when portrayed by Matt Smith. The Doctor’s face and body change with each regeneration. Now, he’s the sexy, mature gentleman – gray hair, severe eye brows and tailored attire from an overpriced shop on Hyde Street. This is the Doctor that supposedly makes no mistakes. Or less mistakes. This is the Doctor that maybe fixes past mistakes.

Will he be a dangerous Doctor? Or a fatherly Doctor? Or both? Or something else?

    Stan’s two cents

Doctor Who is one of the most enjoyable and intriguing mysteries of geek culture. And that’s why we talk about it. Because the Doctor captivates our collective Geek imagination. He reminds us of what’s best about us. And the worst. And how we must face our fears, our inescapable loneliness, and great challenges with courage, intelligence, compassion and a decisively good will.

Yomar and Stan answer a question put them by a fan on YouTube. What were their favorite regeneration scenes?

    Stan:

Looking up at Rose, the Doctor says, “I just wanted to tell you that you were fantastic. But, you know what. So was I.”Then Eccleston becomes the silly and sometimes petulant school boy that thinks he’s a man. Err, I meant Tennant.

    Yomar:

“I don’t want to go,” Tennant bemoans. Then Tenant becomes the handsome monkey from outer space. Err, I mean Matt Smith.“I’m a girl,” exclaims the Doctor as he feels his floppy head of hair.

Yomar and Stan also share some of the love the Timey Wimey Tea Time podcast is getting on YouTube and elsewhere.

    emiliogomez:

Puedo oír los tambores. El Maestro está por venir. Puedo oír los tambores.

    Scarlett Beane:

What did you think about the rogue Dalek? Why did the doctor let him go?

    @KlaudiaJurewicz

@Yogizilla @Faryna so far so good! #megusta your #twtt lol

    @NadiaLamadridTea time! 🙂

Tell us (@Faryna and @Yogizilla) how much and why you love the Timey-Wimely Tea Time on Twitter and we’ll post it in our recap with a little link love.

    And then there was poetry.

Yomar read the last lines of Maya Angelou’s poem, Alone. It reminds Yomar of the Doctor’s travels, companions, and the dark threads being spun in Series 8.

    Now if you listen closely
I’ll tell you what I know
    Storm clouds are gathering
    The wind is gonna blow
The race of man is suffering
And I can hear the moan,
    ‘Cause nobody,
    But nobody
Can make it out here alone.
    Alone, all alone
    Nobody, but nobody
Can make it out here alone.

Stan recited Juan Ramón Jiménez’s poem, I am not I. He says it reminds him of the Doctor, regenerations, and the different faces worn by the Doctor.

    I am not I.
                        I am this one
walking beside me whom I do not see,
whom at times I manage to visit,
    and whom at other times I forget;
who remains calm and silent while I talk,
and forgives, gently, when I hate,
who walks where I am not,
who will remain standing when I die.

    • Come to think of it, the Doctor is more of a man-alien right now than an alien-man. Episode 3 proves this. SPOILERS! The twelfth Doctor proves that size doesn’t matter as he faces off against Robin Hood to defend his strength. Then they play footsies and argue like a married couple. So, Is the Doctor’s strength his intellect or his ego? It feels like more of Column B here. Such petty human behavior! *SMH*

      • Are you saying he needs to find his manliness? 😛

Tennant had more than a few scenes where he leaned more toward ego than intellect. This noise is, perhaps, merely the autobiographical defects of the writer.

        • This is true.. But we are seeing these themes amplified now. I think its too much too soon. New direction is a nice thing but please ease us in. 8)

    • I went deep on the concept of the lonely Doctor but iOS support for WordPress apparently sucks. It ate my comment! I guess we will have to wait for #TWTT to go deeper! =o)

      • WordPress has outlived it’s usefulness to humanity.

        • I still like it. Its more reliable and less of a time sink than comparable Joomla or Drupal alternatives. I am hesitant to upgrade to “Benny”. I wonder how it will impact things. Gonna have to do a full server image so we can roll back if need be. =oP

    • Great show, guys!

      • Thank you! This weekend is going to be even more EPIC.. I’m binging on Doctor Who again.. And Amazon Prime has tons more free content on there, including all the Tennant and Smith specials!!

Gotta get set up for AllGames.com streaming and do some testing. I guess it will be another early Saturday morning. w00t!

The 12th Doctor is going to rock it or not. If Capaldi doesn’t get the training wheels removed in the next episode, there will be dissent and dismay. But episode two of Season 8 had more than a few surprises beyond a yet limping Capaldi and not least of them, Moffet whipped out the Aristotle and threw down the existential gauntlet.

Tune in Saturday noon ET (9am Los Angeles and 5pm London) for a friendly live chat experience of TWTT 4 on http://www.twitch.tv/geekyantics

Inconceivable! The Doctor Who community has more enthusiasm than any other we know. 1,100 Retweets of our latest Twitter post for Episode 2 of the Time-Wimey Tea Time podcast. We’re feeling the love – big time.

    ..
“Moffet whipped out the Aristotle and threw down the existential gauntlet…”
Are we talking serious philosophy? Or was Moffet just name dropping?

Moffet went deep. It flew way over our heads. At an altitude of 100k feet.

    Timey-Wimey Tea Time Recap

This episode, Matthew BradfordYomar Lopez and Stan Faryna talk about lots – favorite YouTube comments for Timey-Wimey Tea Time, favorite Doctor(s), the art of writing, easter eggs, Missy, Rusty, Aristotle and more.

Matthew Bradford of the ZombieCast podcast makes an interesting point about the apparent problem of Moffet’s easter eggs and overarching story lines. The rewards are cheap and paltry – he suggests. Yomar slays those awkward silences that emanate from Stan’s peaceful center and keeps the unscripted, enlightened conversation bouncing off the walls.

Stan Faryna goes deep and explains the Aristotelian philosophy that underpins the Rusty story in Into the Dalek:

Don’t we have better things to do than think about Aristotle? Maybe not. The transcendentals (Beauty, Goodness and Truth for example) represent that happiness which we all pursue. Ultimately, these are the things of which human happiness consists.

Rusty experiences beauty, then goodness, and, ultimately, truth. And for a moment, a murderous Dalek ceases to be a monster. Even if only for a moment.

    Rusty

    Rusty

As Aristotle explains, each of us seeks beauty, goodness and truth – knowingly or unknowingly. Without exception. With hunger and thirst!

We may be confused about our own motives. We may be mistaken about what happiness is. Or  how we shall obtain it. But an honest self-examination always reveals the inescapable gravitational pull at the center of the human drama – the want for beauty, goodness and truth.

And there is only one sure road to the transcendentals – Love.

Like the Beatles sing it, love is all we need. Not money. Not fame. Not power or the power to make people do what we think they should do.

Last but not least, Yomar Lopez and Stan share some of the love we’re getting on YouTube.

Klaudia Jurewitz writes:I like strong female characters on Doctor Who. Finally we’ve got equal characters that Doctor can work with. That being said I still don’t get Clara and her attitude when the regenerated Doctor looks older than the previous one. • Wait, w0t? I am judging the contest??

I think we should put the contest up to community vote. Most will want to participate but may not want to sing. It’ll be more fun that way.. And then there’s no hard feelings or suspicion if I pick people I happen to like or whatever.. Or we can come up with a more objective criteria.

Either way, more Soft Kitty contest details are forthcoming! I’m also going to get a poll up so we can get a more formal decision on the best time slot to do live shows.

#TWTT will be live on Saturdays, likely in the early afternoon so we can accommodate our global audience and make it easier on people that sleep in (or had too much to drink the night before). We’ll stream on Twitch, as usual. We *WERE* thinking about Google Hangouts ON AIR but, seeing how Google screwed with our channel recently, we’re going to be extra careful about relying *TOO* much on YouTube.

    “How about six,” asked Anca.

“No,” replied George in private chat.

    “Six incoming.”

    “we don’t want it.”

    “Make that a train.”

“No trains. Take it somewhere else.”

George switched out his sniper rifle for an AK74. He opened fire from a fire escape and took down a dozen wild dogs on Anca’s heels. The sound was deafening. The online audience (the stream) watching George’s game on Twitch complained loudly.

Kitty Karla (Moderator): “Snap – my ears are bleeding!”

Charly Gainsbourg (Subscriber): A little advance warning would be nice.

Grey Kim (Super Fan): “Thanks for blowing out my speakers.”

    Matthias Müller (OP): !Songrequest GOTCHA247CH1

Sebastien Nobunaga (Heroic Fan): Sniper 9 O Clock. Window with white shutters.

MiniMe: Sebastien Nobunaga has earned one achievement point.

“Sorry about that,” George replied in stream as he switched back to his sniper rifle and fired at a shadow in a sixth floor window across the alley.

The shadow dropped and the kill was confirmed by the experience gain.

George’s face and naked upper body appeared in a pop up window on the stream view. He looked just like his game avatar – a sexy, bad ass with a strong jaw. Under his bottom lip, a spiderman spider tattoo looked like it was crawling up toward his mouth. George winked, gave two thumbs up and the pop up disappeared.

    George Sketch Crop

“Good spotting,” George told the stream.

In the alley below, John called out the formations. BMZ1, KFA2, and Flame On. Anca pushed through the firing lines and kept going. She wasn’t sticking around for this train wreck.

“No woman, no cry,” George told the stream.

MiniMe, an automated stream bot, translated John’s commands in George’s stream:

BMZ1: Shotguns in front and on knees
    KFA2: Klashnikov’s Full Auto
Flame On: Flame Throwers gear up

Cyprus Hill’s song, Insane in the Membrane, started to play in stream as the crowd of zombies lurched forward into the alley. George raised his arms and swayed to the music.Down below, the shotguns and klashnikovs roared as zombie corpses piled up.Sleazy, another automated stream bot, texted George’s stream subscription details:

    1-Subscriber: 5 Euro/Month
2-Super Fan: Subscription + Total Donations of 300 Euro in past three months [benefits]
3-Heroic Fan: Subscription + 10 Achievements in past three months [benefits]
4-Legendary: Subscription + Total donations >500 Euro; >20 Achievments [benefits]

5- OP: Subscription + Total Donations >1000 Euro and >100 Achievements [benefits]
6- Troll: Subscription and >20 Penalties

Shouts of OOA (Out of Ammo) flooded the battle group channel.

Three Flame Throwers moved to the front as the rifle and shotgun teams fell back. Like a growling river of mud, zombies climbed over their fallen and continued to pour into the alley.

    “LOVE NEVER FAILS,” shouted John.

“FOH – stand together! Stand strong. This ain’t a MOBA. This game – it don’t get more real than now.”

Three arching streams of fire poured into the advancing river of the dead.

Spambot played it’s message because two noobs joined the stream in the last five minutes:

Welcome to Georgie’s Pudding and Pie experience. George Eliade is number two in Fire of Heaven’s 6th Division – Special Forces. Noobs get one free hour of stream. After that, the money talk and gawkers walk.

Follow Georgie on his pimp adventure through an epic wonderland of zombies, pole dancers and fat loots. Check out Georgie’s website and get to know the dude that you wish you were. Or were with – if you know what I mean.

Shots rang out from the other end of the alley.

“Catch 22,” John texted to the battle group.

    “WTF,” shouted George.

“Bitches be sneaking up on us and where the fuck is our exit spotter?!”

George read and listened to the audience feedback in the stream:

Eat Joe (Troll): Someone want touch your pee pee.

Trollbot: Eat Joe has earned a penalty. (298)

Noob FRPA54:  FUBAR. Run Forest, Run!

Noob USNY702: Any babes in the lurk? Send me your pic. I’ll send you mine.

Trollbot: Noob USNY702 has to pay a 5 Euro creepy fine to continue posting.

Trollbot: Noob FRPA54 has refused to pay a 5 Euro fee for posting a public link.

Below, the roaring streams of flame petered out. They were out of fuel. OOF.

“You like suspense,” George asked his stream.

“If you like it and you know you like it, you know what you gotta do.

    Ka-ching!!!

51,712 of you in the stream. You know how this works. 500 Euro to see what happens next.

This ain’t no MOBA, bitches. Ante up for an epic story!”

The stream went black for a second. Then the lolita version of Rainbow Dash from My Little Pony appeared in the streaming video. She flitted around a pot of gold: 12 year old face with super-sized, cutie eyes, rainbow colored hair, body of a Hustler model, mini skirt and under-sized tee shirt with a small rainbow over her heart.

A shiny red donate button on the side of the pot glowed like it was radioactive.

The numbers (just above the pot) increased sluggishly in 5 Euro increments.

    George narrated the action.

“John’s holding a briefcase over his head. You all know what that is, don’t you?Anyone?

More zombies incoming. You know the law of Epic game challenge! 40x-2p/3+6.”

Text and voices flooded the stream.

Kitty Karla (Moderator): “No Way!!! Are you taking legendary briefcase nuke?”

Sergio Brown (Subscriber): Briefcase nuke? Really? Who drops that?

Eat Joe (Troll): John is a traveling dildo salesman?

Trollbot:  Eat Joe has earned a penalty. (299)

Janelle Tarts (Super Fan): “Sergio – the Senator drops the briefcase nuke.”

MiniMe: Janelle Tarts has earned one karma point.

The numbers above the pot of gold increased.

    250. 255. 305. 320. 420. 515.

    “GOAL,” George shouted in Stream.

Rainbow Dash raised her arms in victory, pushed out her chest and took a grand bow as the view of George’s game resolved in the stream video.

Below, John led the exodus of the 30 person battle team with the briefcase held high over his head. The ten person Player Killer team that had wanted to ambush John’s battle group held their rifles at rest as John’s team exited the alley. They didn’t want to die. Death in this game was permanent and there was no way of avoiding death if John blew them all up with a nuke.

Meanwhile, zombies spilled over the top of the burning wall of crispy corpses. Big and tall zombies. Small and thin zombies. Yellow and white, crusty faces animated in their anguish and hunger for human proteins. Their clothes burned as they slid, tumbled and crawled down the burning pile of the first zombies that went into the alley.

George looked down at a barrel beside him and spoke to the stream:

“I could drop the barrel bomb and clear those zombies. Or I could let them crush that Plater Killer team.

    The decision is yours.

Vote 1 for me to give the ass hats a break? Vote 2 so we kick back and watch the carnage. Vote 3 if you want me to make the call.

You got 60 seconds to cast your vote.”

    • Ooooohhh… A zombie fan! I need to get busy with my creative writing, it seems.

If you dig zombies, check out our friends at ZombieCast. They’re the official podcast for the Zombie Research Society.. And they talk ALL things zombies! Our common friends include authors of some recent zombie books, too!

Check out Rachel Drummond and Eddie Rotten.. Last but not least, the “We’re Alive” radio drama is available for free on Stitcher. They recently finished the series and I must say: the show has an awesome plot and some of the best voice acting I have ever heard!! =oD

    • I didn’t get a notification about the comments to this story. Still, I apologize for my long delay to reply.

Thanks Darlene. I’m really glad you see George in the sketch!

    • Thanks Annie!

    • Zombies are OP!

  • We’ve been teasing (and teased by) the release details for Hearthstone Curse Of Naxxramas for months here on Geeky Antics and on HorsePLAY! LIVE.  Even on Episode 31 (seen below), we talked Hearthstone and started to speculate around Blizzard’s usual vague reports.  Note the Hearthstone-themed overlay..  Yeah, we LOVE this game!

The wait is over guys – Curse Of Naxxramas releases TODAY!

Blizzard pulled another sneaky update here, just like they did with the Hearthstone iPad app release.  Yesterday they tweeted that CoN would be released within a “few hours”.  That was roughly 13 hours ago as I bring this breaking news to you guys.  There’s no planned maintenance so I reckon this is a timed release we’ll see around noon on the West coast and 3pm for EST (GMT-5).

If you want to know some of the things to expect, check out our last The GANG Minute (leaked Curse Of Naxxramas photos inclusive).  You’ll want to hoard around 2400-2800 gold if you want to avoid paying out of pocket or are just budget-minded (translation: cheap bastards like many of us).  The first installment of the single-player Curse Of Naxxramas adventure will be free, Hearthstone fans – you still have time to raise gold!

On a similar note, there is still time to qualify for the first official Hearthstone World Championship.  Hit Legendary and stay on the grind.  Details on Curse Of Naxxramas and the Hearthstone World Championship can be found on the Battle.net game client front page/dashboard.

For my Twitch followers, I am taking this opportunity to catch up on my streaming.  I’ve been super busy tending to my family and working on projects but now we HAVE to get together and talk Hearthstone.  Tweet me @Yogizilla and we can set up Skype chats while we play some Curse Of Naxxramas.  Expect tons of Hearthstone streaming and #TheDustOff action too!

  • Sure do – its our preferred social platform! I am @Yogizilla and the network is @GeekyAntics. Some of the GANG includes @Faryna, @Spathizilla,l @GamingDeath, @ObioneX2, @Fortengard, and @DocRoeGames. 8)
