I’ve been running around like a chicken without a head – in a GOOD way! We’re working on launching new shows, do some giveaways and contests, and keep the momentum going. Pardon the marketing talk but, really, momentum rocks.. We are making big moves!
What momentum am I talking about? Peep the video version of The GANG Minute.
…And now for some highlights and latest haps!
Geeky Antics Network Launch Party
What is this business about a launch party? Well, it’s more like a marketing campaign but that’s boring. This is a big celebration.
- We are celebrating hitting some big milestones during our soft launch/beta phase – 3K+ fans on Facebook – w00t!
- We are celebrating our awesome shows, collaborators, contributors, and supporters.
- We are celebrating the influx of donations in the form of love, monetary support, games, services, etc.
- We are celebrating YOU!
There’s no end date for the campaign. Basically, the better the results, the more we will keep it going. We need your help.
Tell your friends about what we are doing here. The Geeky Antics network is here to help geeks liberate their content and level the playing field. The 1% dominates so many spaces, podcasting and streaming inclusive, and we want to empower others to get A-Lister results without losing their souls. We hope this excites our community as much as our contributors.
I am passionate about our mission to bring quality, authentic geeky content to a more global audience. Our vision is simple: we want to be a Geek & Sundry that will focus more on engagement and niche content with a simple approach, rather than featuring huge personalities or focusing on high production value. We’re hoping by celebrating and creating the good kind of hype, we can rally more people behind these core values and ideals.
As part of this campaign, we will launch several events and new content series. This includes, but is not limited to, giveaways, contests, podcasts, streams, marathons, and fundraisers. Nothing is set in stone because we like to stay nimble so we will play off each other. Please help us out by sharing our excitement with your friends and family.
New Features, Content, And Goodies
We have a CRAP-TON of awesome new features and goodies on the new Geeky Antics site. Here’s a quick run-through:
- Site registration
- Custom profiles & avatars
- LIVE TV
- YouTube sharing
- Twitter sharing
- Open commenting
That’s just for starters. We’ll go more in-depth during HorsePLAY! LIVE so be sure to join us on the GeekyAntics Twitch channel Thursday at 9pm EDT.
One of the most exciting things we are adding are two new areas. The first will allow us to do fundraising for individual contributors and the network as a whole. The biggest one is our Storytelling section. Here, we will feature community submissions in the form of short stories, fan fiction, haikus, or whatever other creative writing you guys share with us. We will also share stuff from aspiring authors and other awesome geeks you might have heard of (Nika Harper, we’re looking at you).
Please keep checking back. We’re doing constant updates to the site and they’re all kind of a big deal. *grin*
Game Dev Tycoon Giveaway
UPDATE 6/25/2014: The giveaway has been added to this blog post and our Facebook fan page. No one has entered… Yet. The opportunity is ripe for the taking!
Ah, giveaways, people love them.. We know that so this is almost obligatory. This may not be the best marketing strategy BUT it is a great way to give back to our community.
With that in mind, our first official giveaway as a network will be Game Dev Tycoon. This is a wonderful game by Greenheart Games that puts you into a light simulation where you play as the founder of a game development studio. You get to start from the garage and, if you make good decisions, you will grow into a megacorporation. Game Dev Tycoon is a surprisingly deep experience but it is also quite easy to pick up and figure out. If you want high replay value and something that is very much “pick up and play”, you’ll LOVE Game Dev Tycoon!
Details for this giveaway and others will be featured here on the blog. We may make a dedicated giveaways/promos area. I am still debating on that. I LOVE giveaways but I also know we should not fall into the trap of gimmicky marketing. Our hope is that people will come for the free stuff but find value in human connections and great content.
Steam And GOG Summer Sales
There are so many great games on sale right now. Between Steam and GOG, I don’t know where to start. We won’t even get into Humble Bundle (though you should check them out since their proceeds go to charity and supporting growing developers). My first recommendation is Hammerwatch.
Hammerwatch reminds me of old-school Gauntlet with deeper gameplay. It’s still minimalist in some areas without compromising replay value. The biggest thing to note in Hammerwatch is that it rewards teamwork and exploration. Also, the boss battles are all epic.. And quite challenging.
Another pick I’d like to share is Risk Of Rain. Like Hammerwatch, Risk Of Rain has online multiplayer support for up to four players. The choices in character classes/roles are more extensive. On that note, Hammerwatch does need more character types and customization but it’s still a great game.
I’ve been really into the rogue-likes lately. Something about insanely hard, permadeath type games keeps me coming back for more.
Maybe I’m a massochist?
Other games to keep an eye out are…
- Skulls of the Shogun
- Natural Selection II
- Magic 2014
- Magic 2013 (better than 2014, IMHO)
- The Ship
- Frozen Synapse
- Guns of Icarus Online
…And that’s just to name a few. I am focusing on multiplayer games because it’d be AWESOME to do some community gaming and streaming.
Steam Gift Exchange & Free Games
Before we wrap this issue of The GANG Minute, I want to remind everyone that both Steam and GOG have free games you can score just by signing up and claiming them. Steam does require installation of their client first but that’s besides the point. We encourage our fellow geeks to participate in our Steam gift exchange to keep the good cheer and new friendships going strong. Many of the purchases on Steam come with giftable copies or 2/4-pack bundles. What a great opportunity to brighten someone’s day!
Shout-out to Spathizilla, Zang, Dblueguy, and everyone else who has donated games for personal use and giveaway purposes. You guys are AMAZING!
Thank you for tuning in.. Now to get the Game Dev Tycoon giveaway online! w00t w00t!!
Do you have any games on your Steam or GOG radar? Share them in the comments. Maybe someone will gift you a copy!
