Christmas Merriment, Hope, Joy, & Musings For All – Happy Holidays!

I just had the pleasure of enjoying a heart-felt article written by Alister Kennedy of 42 Level One and Star Wars RebelsCast UK.  It is so authentic and moving that I felt I really needed to open up more myself as we celebrate the holidays.  I hope I get a chance to share Ali’s words but, for now, I hope I can at least find the courage to share what my heart and soul feels I should.

For starters, this year has been the hardest year for me and my family, though I try to shelter them from my pain and struggles as much as possible.  It all started with when two folks, Patty Vollherbst and Lauri Flaquer, stole all the credit for the hard work I put into a web site I was developing.  I was willing to do tons of work for free and on the cheap (and I did end up unpaid for most of the work)..  But apparently the fact that I asked for money for the tons of work I put in didn’t make me a team player.  I think it’s fair to ask for less than a fourth of what would have otherwise been a $15,000 job just for starters by other standards (I know because I check what the competition charges).

If you want to know just how much I hate thieves and stealing of credit for work, read my content/creative work theft article on Y3B.  I am a very forgiving and understanding guy, more than most, but theft is something that really makes me a sad panda, whether you steal someone’s work or you refuse to pay for it.

Usually, I don’t like to call people out but I need to release this burden and, since addressing it calmly with the offending parties did not work, I will share with ears that will listen and hearts that care.  This event set off a chain reaction.  Rumors were spread that I was over-charging or trying to milk customers.  Of course, these rumors did not include the fact that our Project Manager was MIA for over two weeks and the lines of communication / chain of command were vastly unclear.  I lost other clients in the process because, you know, negativity is more pervasive than anything good.

Then there were deaths in the family, betrayals by loved ones, fighting off sickness, endless car problems, and much, much more.  It all seemed to come together in spikes.  Just when we started to see the light at the end of the tunnel, things went pitch black all over again.  Needless to say, it’s been rough.  Losing Robin Williams didn’t help either.  Sure, I didn’t know him but it felt like the end of a great era, perhaps a portent of things to come.  I’m not saying suicide is the right choice but I can relate.  Depression really does hurt.

In spite of all that darkness, I still feel a glimmer of hope and joy.  It’s hard not to during this time.  I look back, even at recent years, and recall better days…  I know better days will return, too.

So here I am contemplating, musing even, and remembering the merriment and goodness of this holiday season.  I hope you’ll allow me to share these emotions and unadulterated thoughts with you today…

What Christmas Means To Me

Christmas has always been a special time to me.  It’s not because I can expect some neat gifts and maybe extra spending money, though that is nice, but rather the love and spirit that the season usually brings.  This is a time of reflection, family, compassion, and countless memories.

As a parent, I get to enjoy the merriment and laughter of young ones running about and opening presents frantically.  Truth be told, this year won’t be big for gifts at all and we’ll be happy to at least enjoy one big meal.  The key is that we’re together as a family.  Hopefully, we can put our worries aside and enjoy some board games, reminiscing, and much needed laughs.

Friends and family.  That’s what Christmas means to me.  When I say “friends”, I mean the few that actually give a damn and stick around.   Those are the rare treasures that the holidays bring us.

As a Christian, I do believe we should bring back Christ into the holiday but I do not force that upon others.  As long as we all exercise a spirit of giving, compassion, and gratitude, we can all get along.  With the weather getting colder and the days getting darker, it’s easy to fall into depression and angst.  This is when we need hope and love more than ever.

Christmas now also marks the one-year anniversary of HorsePLAY! LIVE and the Geeky Antics network (well, almost).

HorsePLAY! EP53 – Christmas 2014 Special PART 1

After some crazy tech issues with HorsePLAY! LIVE Episode 52, we decided to keep the one-year anniversary celebrations going.  With Christmas right around the corner as well, we were feeling particularly nostalgic.  Most of the memories took us to happy places but there were some anger-inducing memories too.  We try to keep the salt to a minimum as we share Christmas memories, favorite HorsePLAY! moments, and rants.

We play quite a few voicemail messages and enjoy many laughs with our live chat.  One of my favorites was the drunken karaoke game review with DekardC.  Of course, to kick off the episode, we have a hilarious (and pretty catchy) dubstep Christmas intro theme.

Please leave us some well wishes via voicemail – (206) 415-4987 – we love you!

[NSFW] Food Porn: French Toast Roast – Oi Oi, It’s So Moist!

WARNING:  If you are offended by strong language or sexual inuendo, do not read ahead..  And sorry.

Do you love french toast?  Maybe you love breakfast food?  This is the recipe for you guys!

I stumbled across this thanks to a random, unrelated Imgur share from our pal, DekardC.  Credit goes out to IvanTheTerrible for sharing this and making us drool a bit.  I must say that we LOVE having breakfast foods at any time of the day in our household so this one gets me extra excited!

The French Toast Roast is a carb fanatics wet dream come true.  We haven’t tried this out at home (yet) but just looking at this really does it for me.  Let’s look at what you need to get this lovely treat going!

French Toast Roast Ingredients Spread

French Toast Roast Ingredients SPREAD…  NVM, that pun is too easy!

The idea is that you want to create a glaze concoction to fry the bread in (without the crust).  Meanwhile, there is a cream mixture using bananas, vanilla extract, cinnamon, sugar, and eggs.  This actually gets injected into the naked, delicious bread.  The recipe’s creator recommend a Brioche, which sounds like the name of a fancy escort.  I’m sure you can use any ‘ol French or even *GASP* Italian bread.

French Toast Roast with a cream center!

Oh yeah baby, fill me up with your delicious cream!!

This is where it gets exciting.  Rather than bathing the the bread in the usual egg-and-sweets soak, you fry it in butter after dusting the bread in sugar.  Look at this beautiful golden tan!

Walker Stalker Con 2014 Atlanta Highlights & Musings #WSCAtlanta #TWDFamily #TWTT #HorsePLAY

Happy Halloween!

I know it’s a little early but the coming weeks will be very busy for us on the network.  We’ll be with our families and catching up on projects here and there..  Don’t worry: while we may not be streaming, blogging, or podcasting much, we’ll be here in spirit..  And probably watching lots of horror movies and shows.  I know I will be watching American Horror Story and maybe Sleepy Hollow with my wife.  YAY!

Happy Halloween - Trick Or Treat - Tasteful Anime Witch Wallpaper

I’m still on that Walker Stalker Con high but, sadly, I can’t enjoy it as much.  Duty calls as projects pile up and my family prepares to move…  But enough about me!

Here are a few videos that cover the highlights at Walker Stalker Con Atlanta 2014.  If you’ve never been to WSC, you’ll know what to expect.  If you went last year, you can get a feel for what has changed.  Read onward for some highlights and the burning question:

Is Walker Stalker Con [or conventions in general] a mere money grab?

I want to say that I really enjoyed the convention but, as with anything else, there were opportunities.  We’ll get into that after the “video break”.  Sit tight, friends!

HorsePLAY! LIVE EP45: Walker Stalker Con Post-Show

The GANG Minute / Geektastic Vlog Mashup: My Personal WSC Highlights & Concerns

On-Location At AmericasMart Atlanta: Walker Stalker Con Fan Reactions & Event Photos

Walker Stalker Con was a fun event to go to as a fan and there was plenty to cover as media.  There were tons of panels, celebrities, vendors, and other attractions.  WAY too much to cover in proper detail.  Here are the main things that stood out for me.

Before I share my impressions and opinions here, I want to note that this was my first Walker Stalker Con but I have been to many conventions.  Typically, conventions are forgettable to me but WSC has something special to it.  I believe my feelings here may be in the minority because I don’t get excited by autographs and star-studded events.  Before I share my thoughts, here is what I look for in a convention to consider it worthwhile:

  • You’ll enjoy the event regardless of how much money you spend.
  • Vendors get enough foot traffic to justify booth costs.
  • Autographs and photo ops are subsidized or minimal to provide more time/focus for other events.
  • Event schedules account for waiting/travel times, breaks, and the like.
  • Merch mark-up covers costs but does not exhibit extreme profit margins (i.e. greed).
  • It is clear that fans of all kinds are the priority.
  • Media is given proper access and treatment without taking away from paying guests.
  • Behind-the-scenes information and anecdotes..  Stories worth sharing!

These are some of the things I’ll be pondering as I share my thoughts on Walker Stalker Con Atlanta.  Now let’s jump in!

Mini Zombie Photo Journal: #WalkerStalkerCon #Atlanta 2014 | #TWTT #HorsePLAY

UPDATE:  Had some tech issues.  All sorted out now.  This was supposed to be a early morning piece.  My bad!

Day One of Walker Stalker Con was pretty darn awesome.  It’s already almost time to head back but here are some quick highlights.  I apologize in advance for some of the crappy photos but, hey, it’s something!

IMG_20141017_131131

Eric and James of The Walker Stalkers podcast kicked off the event sharing a brief history of the event.  It’s hard to believe it hasn’t even been two years since WSC started.

They discussed how the event started as a simple fan meetup.  The expected turnout was 1K but, instead, over 10K people showed up.  This year, they are expecting over 50K at the event.  Their growth has been amazing and inspiring!  This reminds us that podcasts are still ripe opportunities.

20141017_132529

Walker Stalkers LIVE reminded us that this is a true fan event.  Eric and James offered General Admissions attendees a chance at a free VIP upgrade by playing The Walking Dead Family Feud.  It was awesome seeing old TWD cast members sitting right there with the fans.  The energy and wit the actors brought was refreshing and it really set the tone for the event.  This is huge considering Dania, a.k.a. Michonne, cancelled at the very last minute and other issues overshadowed Day One.  To that I say “shame on you” to the managers and agents who failed to see the importance of this event.

20141017_131839

Lots of great surveys were featured in this game of Family Feud.  The big one is shown above, when contestants were asked, “What are the biggest threats in The Walking Dead?”  Sadly, spoiled food and squirrels did not make the board.  Doh.

20141017_134137

The main panel room on the 3rd floor of AmericasMart building 2 is huge.  There is not much scheduled in the space, which is a shame, but the setup is nice.  Great lighting and set pieces.  This event space in Atlanta is impressive and spacious, yet it’s not overwhelming like, say, Jacob Javits Center in NYC.  There is a certain warmth here.

20141017_141321

The next panel I caught was Emory University’s Zombie Ethics discussion.  They went deep on the allure of The Walking Dead and what defines ethics under normal or apocalyptic circumstances.  Are zombies sentient enough to be subject to ethics ?  Is mistreatment of zombies animal cruelty?  Does choice and free will determine the responsibility of ethics?   I really enjoyed the discussion so expect a write-up on it.  There were audio issues but the presenters and experts were wonderful so I stuck around for the whole thing.

Walker Stalkers 100th Episode & UNofficial Walker Stalker Con 2014 Guide

Walker Stalker Con Atlanta is COMING!

UPDATE 10/17/2014:  There are a few last-minute  cancellations.  The latest was Dania G, known to us hardcore The Walking Dead fan as the super hero ninja – Michonne!  It’s a bit disappointing but there’s still much to check out and tons to do.  See you soon!

With just a few days til Walker Stalker Con Atlanta, we figured it’s time to share some love with our fellow zombie fans, podcasters, and cosplay geeks!  First and foremost, congrats to Eric and James on their 100th episode of The Walker Stalkers podcast.  If you haven’t checked it out yet, we’ve embedded the MP3 player below:

Eric & James From The Walker Stalkers Podcast With Robert Kirkman

Here are some of my favorite nuggets from The Walker Stalkers Episode 100:

  • TWD companion series has been ordered for pilot. It’s official! Robert Kirkman can’t spill the beans (though he would love to) but he can confirm that it’s not in Georgia.
  • TWD was one of many projects Kirkman was working in back in around 2003. He admits it was luck that TWD stuck. It was released under the Image label as part of a big horror push. Initial sales were abysmal. Storylines were rushed because Kirkman thought it would not last. By around issue 3, it started to gain traction, much like the show.
  • Robert Kirkman says, “The Walking Dead is essentially the Twilight of zombie series… It’s essentially a soap opera.”
  • Robert admits influence from Quentin Terentino, Stephanie Meyer, and others.
  • The Kirman workflow: bouncing around projects.  This keeps him invested and engaged so he does not burn out on any one project. If you are curious about Kirkman’s other projects, check out Invincible.
  • Robert Kirkman despises cameos because it ruins immersion. He realizes people seem to love it but he can’t do it. He promises he will never do it because it feels arrogant to him.
  • Kirkman says, if he had to cosplay as a TWD character, it would be Michonne.  The poncho is the closest thing to his “dress for comfort” approach.
  • Kirkman on clothing: “Pajama pants are to an extent my work pants… I like to feel to an extent I am naked.”
  • Kirkman admits he is not a music aficionado. He does dig Neil Young.  “My Top 5 is messed up Neil Young, Nick Cave, Presidents of the United States of America, George Michael (Faith album, not WHAM), and AC/DC.”
  • Tori Amos, Marilyn Manson, and Natalie Merchant are the only three concerts he ever went to.
  • Eric and James reminisce about the early days of The Walker Stalkers podcast and how far they’ve come along.
  • The trolls of yesteryear are called out..  Where are they nowadays?

Robert Kirkman is an inspiration to me because he is an everyday kinda dude.  He’s approachable, down-to-earth, and pretty darn humble.

What’s important here is that The Walking Dead wasn’t an overnight success but he stuck with it.  That’s success in simplest terms: it’s a marathon, not a sprint.  Sometimes, you just get lucky..  So don’t give up, geeks!

Similarly, Eric & James experienced great success with their podcast and eventually turned a fan meetup into a massive event.  It wasn’t always easy.  Like many creative works that start off as a  labor of love, there were critics and trolls.  But here they are..  You guys did it – CONGRATS!

#TWTT XTC & #FlashFiction Potluck Kick-Off @Mattomcfly @Faryna

…Greetings, friends!

We have two bonus #TWTT videos for you this week, which should offset any potential interruption coming up in the near future (details on that forthcoming).  Matt Bradford of Zombie Cast, Video Game Outsiders, GamesRadar, and Guiness World Records joins us as we GO DEEPER®!  These shows feature what you, our beautiful community, have requested; namely, LIVE flash fiction readings!

In addition to the three pieces I read on-air, I added another piece I just whipped up.  Hope you enjoy them!  XTX001 Part 2  is where you can go to listen to the live readings and our concepts thereof.

If you want to be part of my #FlashFiction Potluck, e-mail your piece to yomar(arroba)geekyantics(punto)net – looking forward to inspiring each other!

…Proper attribution/credit will be provided, of course!  This is just a fun way to share quick, raw fictional works with each other.  In future installments, I’d like to share writing prompts and challenge everyone (myself included) with monthly themes.  For example, we can do word count limits, use word banks, or set up specific topics and formats.  Let me know what you think, lovely geeks!

Timey-Wimey Tea Time PART 1

  • What is the purpose of podcasting?
  • What keeps us motivated with podcasting and social media?
  • Is the Video Game Outsiders approach a good model to follow?
  • Do we have a responsibility to our fans or community as creatives?
  • Can you do something you love AND be productive with it?
  • Doctor Who Series 8 mid-season review.
  • Writers need to know when to “leave a moment alone”.
  • Series 8 may suffer from too many hands in the pot…
  • …or is it lack of creative direction?
  • The importance of managing expectations in ALL ventures.
  • Narrative Structure VS. Podcast Structure

Timey-Wimey Tea Time PART 2

  • Is Danny Pink manly or whimpy?
  • A man’s struggle of ego vs. righteousness vs. love/compassion.
  • Does the Doctor love Clara
  • Stan’s encounter with infidelity, deceipt, and mind games.
  • Is it insecurity or strength?
  • Flash fiction readings..  These are truly raw works!
  • Inspirations and creative processes driving our fictional works.
  • A future of lazy couch potatoes.
  • Foreshadowing of augmented and virtual reality gone wrong.
  • Control is an illusion.
  • Everyone has a boss.  Complete freedom is also an illusion.

…and now for some flash ficiton!

Mrs. Busy Work

“Honey, I am awfully busy today.. Can this wait?”

Wilfredo was very perplexed. Why did all this have to be done now? He had deadlines up the wazoo. As it was, he would be lucky to get any sleep in the coming weeks. In spite his pleas, his wife, Suki, insisted.

“No this NEEDS to be done NOW.”

Today was the day Suki decided that everyone would take on the urgent tasks of relacing all shoes, shuffling furniture about, cleaning the fridge, vacuuming every nook and cranny, and mastering the absolutely mudane. As usual, these “plans” were executed on a whim. There was no distinction between want and need. Every task was treated as if thousands of lives depended on them.

The kids played it smart. After bathing the dogs and mowing the lawn, they magically disappeared. Wilfredo continued to break his back as Suki barked unrelenting orders.

“No no no… That’s not how you load the dishwasher. Do it this way.”

“Sweetheart, I read the manual and this model has the sprinkler arms in the middle. Every dish should face the center.”

“WELL, I don’t care what the manual says.. I want it done MY way.”

Wilfredo thought to himself, “This is gonna be a looooong day…”

Why #GamerGate Doesn’t Really Matter – Let’s Just Enjoy Games!

In recent months, you could not even peek at a social media stream without catching talk about feminism, offensive video game tropes, journalists selling out, and inauthentic game reviews. That was just the tip of the iceberg. All these things culminated in what is affectionately (not really) called GamerGate.

Do not confuse #GamerGate with #GamersGate – they are two VERY different things!

DISCLAIMER: Though this always applies to myself and our independent contributors here on the network, let me reiterate that the opinions expressed here are not those of our partners, affiliates, team members, and the network as a whole.

GamerGate went beyond the issues of feminism, alleged “sex scandals”, and the need for reformation in the gaming industry as a whole. It is culmination of the desperate outcry of gamers, consumers, and even industry professionals who are tired of the BS. We feel cheated, used, underappreciated, and deceived. Those feelings were sadly focused into fear of change, finger-pointing, dirt-slinging, and other petty drama.

Many attribute the GamerGate fallout to the Zoe Quinn debacle.  I won’t re-hash the whole thing but it sure got ugly.  Certainly, there are double standards when it comes to adult relationships but people sure LOVE jumping to extreme conclusions.  The trolling was real.  Heck, the whole thing went beyond trolling..  Hacking, Total Biscuit, Phil Fish, and more craziness got thrown into the mix!

I would say the breaking point really came thanks to Anita Sarkeesian.  Her web series, Feminist Frequency, may have served as a catalyst to the turmoil and resentment.  Opponents felt she was merely playing the self-righteous role (i.e. #SJW, Social Justice Warrior) to draw attention to herself.  The reality is that all the debate and angst came from tension long in the making, through no fault of her own or any specific parties.

I do not wish to downplay the personal attacks Anita got for speaking to issues she feels are important. Discrimination and objectification are very real things in any medium or industry, not just video games. That said, there are deeper issues here that the PC (political correctness) police are tucking away in favor of their own agendas. Right or wrong, it feels like the outspoken few are holding on to their own biases and skewed worldviews.

Let me be clear: it is wonderful and worthwhile for folks like Anita Sarkeesian to encourage perspectives that focus on the artistry and social issues driving or driven by video games. It’s equally important to remember to have fun and not assume every creative work is ridden with offensive material or tropes. It’s easy to find issues when you dig deep but is that really what we should be expending our energy on? More importantly, women should not aim to be the equals of men.. That is setting your sights too low. I kid, I kid.

The core issue here is one of trust, not social hierarchy or constructs. Even for more casual gamers, there is a substantial investment of time and money which we all feel justifies our serving as keepers or critics of our gaming hobby or lifestyle. The dissatisfaction and distrust with gaming journalism is a reflection of the course corrections we are seeing in social media, communication, and business [ethics] as a whole.

Doctor Who Season 8 Starts Saturday, August 23rd 2014

If you haven’t caught our new podcast, Timey-Wimey Tea Time, we have everything you need to know for Doctor Who Season 8.  This weekend will be a big one for sci-fi fans and Whovians worldwide yet, with all the buzz going around, there are still people that ask,

Doctor WHO??

With more than 50 years of shows, novels, fan fiction, audio dramas, games, and even comics under the belt, the Doctor Who series is something of a big deal.  Surprisingly, it’s not quite mainstream so you hipsters out there should give it a shot.  For realzies.

Doctor Who has romance, adventure, space exploration, time travel, eccentric characters, talking dogs, jelly beans, and high fashion sense.  There’s just so much to love in this series.  With Peter Capaldi coming in as the 13th Doctor, we old-school Whovians are wondering if the series is coming back to the roots.  Will this be the more serious, gritty, and suspenseful Doctor Who we’ve been hoping for?

The Twelfth Doctor (Matt Smith) & Amy Pond (Karen Gillan)

Sorry, no Amy Pond..  And possibly no Clara.

The GANG Minute: Robin Williams Death And The Hope It Brings Us

This is usually the part where I share the latest TGM video and discuss the key points further but Twitch decided to randomly mute my video due to non-existent copyrighted material.  YAY!

Anyway…

The claims of Robin Williams’ death are not a hoax.  This is a tragic day indeed.  It’s not merely because we lost another brilliant mind and a joy to the world, but because depression SUCKS.

I must admit that I woke up this morning feeling that something was off.  In my gut, I felt something bad was going to happen.  It has been an emotional roller coaster and the news of Robin Williams did not make it any better.

Jimmy Kimmel said it best…

If you’re sad, tell someone.

We tend to be so guarded and caustic as human beings these days.  It’s easier to be bitter, troll a bit, and just mask our emotions with constant sarcasm, partying, sillyness, stunts, or whatever.  We all hurt but few of us have strong support networks and healthy sharing practices in place.

Here is Robin Williams, a wealthy actor who we would think would be free from the usual stress and challenges we peasants have to deal with..  And he commits suicide (allegedly).  No one is safe.  Identify your true friends and get some open dialogue going, guys.  If you are lacking friends, make some.  None of us can make it alone.

Gosh…

I can’t believe Mork & Mindy, one of my favorite shows in my youth, came out around 35 years ago.  This hits home for me because I always felt I identified with Robin.  He was zany, misunderstood, and a little too chipper for some.  Robin Williams embraced his little spark of insanity.  I think we all should.

Let your feelings flow, let go a bit, and let people in.

It’s time to do some healing, gang.

Remember: we are building the GANG to make it easier for people to have that support and trust in place.  We are here for you (some of us more than others, of course).  I hope that we can show the same sort of compasssion we are seeing tonight on social media..  But EVERY DAY.  I know we can do it.  #GeeksUnite
