Every Day Carry: What’s In Your Bug-Out Bag?

Fanny Pack / Bug-Out Bag

By Rachel Drummond

If you’ve been paying attention to the news, you may have seen the reports of major bushfires in Victoria. While this is nothing new, it made me think of something that preppers are known for. The Bug Out Bag. It’s that bag that we who believe in preparedness are mocked for by those who have no idea what it really is. Everybody, in one shape or other, has a bug out bag, or if you like, it’s younger sister the every-day carry bag. Some are just poorly equipped. Men have their wallets, women have their handbags Soldiers.. well NO-ONE is more equipped than they are.

I have two bags now. I have my BOB in my car, something that if I didn’t have, I would have had to turn in my apocalypse card. As a nurse though, I’ve had to carry what amounts to an EDC. In aged care, this was a pouch that consisted of ID, scissors, tape, pens (many, many pens), Handover sheet, alcohol (swabs!! gee, I’m a little more professional than that!) and I usually throw a simple dressing in there at the start of the shift. trust me, it’s needed more often than not, and having it on me saves a lot of time!

I was looking through my pouch this morning though. Thinking about what I would have to change going into the hospital. As of an hour ago, it is almost three times as thick. Just from what I have at home, I’ve found room for my stethoscope torch and diary. I have no idea what else I’m going to have to make room for in there or what I won’t be using as much of. I have so many things I would love to take with me (My ‘nursing for dummies’ first and foremost among these).

That’s my EDC. Are there any nurses out there who have suggestions on what to add to my EDC? What is something you have in yours that you never use? Do you have a non-nursing EDC or your own BOB?

Actually,  maybe don’t list your name if you have a BOB. I’m pretty sure there are Neegans out there taking advantage of pre-apocalypse information and taking a list of potential ‘cash-cows’. There is already a possibility that I’m going to be getting some nasty comments from nurses who have know their EDC is priceless and are not happy that I painted a target on their back.

I will leave you with a small tip though. When the SHTF, make sure you have a nurse or a doctor with you. Trust me, you’ll need them in your group.

AFTERWORD: Ha! How’s that for multi-tasking, nursing, zombies and prepper talk all wrapped up in one neat little pack.

“Caretakers” – Who Will Watch Over Us?

They watch over us as we grow Providing love and kindness in a harsh world Under their protection we learn How the world works How we work in the world Then time passes and the roles may shift

Providing love and kindness in a harsh world

Under their protection we learn

How the world works

How we work in this world

Then time passes and the roles may shift

In their old age they need us to help them

To use the very ideas they gave us

We watch over them as they did for us

Guiding them as they grow weak

Yet even then they are still watching out for us

Ensuring we have learned the lessons we needed to know

And so the mantle is passed on

Now we are the Caretakers

“Black Jester”, A Poem For Kind People In An Unkind World

Black Jester, story by Lord_Rakdos a.k.a. Andrew Murray. Art is not the property of GeekyAntics network or author.

I tell jokes to hide a sad soul

I laugh to hide a crying child

I listen so no one else is alone

I wear bright colors to distract from red-rimmed eyes

I am kind because I don’t want others to suffer

I teach so others may learn from my mistakes

I lie so no one else need feel my sadness

I help so no one else need be like me

I am the Black Jester

Flash Fiction: Arts, Crafts, And Curiosities

The Sims Do Arts & Crafts - Pottery Rocks!

“Wow, Tamara, you’ve really invested a lot into your business and it shows! The new logo and print materials look fantastic.. And the new chairs and marble counters are really snazzy! You even got a new telephone system installed, I see.”, Greg said enthusiastically as he explored the new store front for his friend’s budding startup.

Tamara responded, “Thank you! I believe that, in business, you have to spend money to make money. That’s the epitome of professionalism.”

One of the shiny new VOIP telephone units started to ring. It lit up and produced a lovely sound reminiscent of an Eric Satie melody.

“Hold on Greg, let me get this,” Tamara picked up the phone and put on her best smile, “Tamara’s Crafts & Curiosities, what can I create for you today?”

Tamara’s facial expression changed from enthusiastic to borderline vomit-yielding grimmace.

Ghost In The Shell Banner 620x465

…Greetings, friends!

We have two bonus #TWTT videos for you this week, which should offset any potential interruption coming up in the near future (details on that forthcoming).  Matt Bradford of Zombie Cast, Video Game Outsiders, GamesRadar, and Guiness World Records joins us as we GO DEEPER®!  These shows feature what you, our beautiful community, have requested; namely, LIVE flash fiction readings!

In addition to the three pieces I read on-air, I added another piece I just whipped up.  Hope you enjoy them!  XTX001 Part 2  is where you can go to listen to the live readings and our concepts thereof.

If you want to be part of my #FlashFiction Potluck, e-mail your piece to yomar(arroba)geekyantics(punto)net – looking forward to inspiring each other!

…Proper attribution/credit will be provided, of course!  This is just a fun way to share quick, raw fictional works with each other.  In future installments, I’d like to share writing prompts and challenge everyone (myself included) with monthly themes.  For example, we can do word count limits, use word banks, or set up specific topics and formats.  Let me know what you think, lovely geeks!

Timey-Wimey Tea Time PART 1

  • What is the purpose of podcasting?
  • What keeps us motivated with podcasting and social media?
  • Is the Video Game Outsiders approach a good model to follow?
  • Do we have a responsibility to our fans or community as creatives?
  • Can you do something you love AND be productive with it?
  • Doctor Who Series 8 mid-season review.
  • Writers need to know when to “leave a moment alone”.
  • Series 8 may suffer from too many hands in the pot…
  • …or is it lack of creative direction?
  • The importance of managing expectations in ALL ventures.
  • Narrative Structure VS. Podcast Structure

Timey-Wimey Tea Time PART 2

  • Is Danny Pink manly or whimpy?
  • A man’s struggle of ego vs. righteousness vs. love/compassion.
  • Does the Doctor love Clara
  • Stan’s encounter with infidelity, deceipt, and mind games.
  • Is it insecurity or strength?
  • Flash fiction readings..  These are truly raw works!
  • Inspirations and creative processes driving our fictional works.
  • A future of lazy couch potatoes.
  • Foreshadowing of augmented and virtual reality gone wrong.
  • Control is an illusion.
  • Everyone has a boss.  Complete freedom is also an illusion.

…and now for some flash ficiton!

Mrs. Busy Work

“Honey, I am awfully busy today.. Can this wait?”

Wilfredo was very perplexed. Why did all this have to be done now? He had deadlines up the wazoo. As it was, he would be lucky to get any sleep in the coming weeks. In spite his pleas, his wife, Suki, insisted.

“No this NEEDS to be done NOW.”

Today was the day Suki decided that everyone would take on the urgent tasks of relacing all shoes, shuffling furniture about, cleaning the fridge, vacuuming every nook and cranny, and mastering the absolutely mudane. As usual, these “plans” were executed on a whim. There was no distinction between want and need. Every task was treated as if thousands of lives depended on them.

The kids played it smart. After bathing the dogs and mowing the lawn, they magically disappeared. Wilfredo continued to break his back as Suki barked unrelenting orders.

“No no no… That’s not how you load the dishwasher. Do it this way.”

“Sweetheart, I read the manual and this model has the sprinkler arms in the middle. Every dish should face the center.”

“WELL, I don’t care what the manual says.. I want it done MY way.”

Wilfredo thought to himself, “This is gonna be a looooong day…”

The grass was soft beneath her knees. Shafts of sunlight blinked kaleidoscope patterns onto her skirt and glinted off the knife nestled in her lap. Today, her last thread snapped.

Looking away, she prayed desperately for God’s forgiveness as she pressed the blade to her wrists.
Her eyes fell on a carving in the trunk of a tree. It was a single word.
Purpose.
In that moment, something inside her shifted.
She pulled herself to her feet. Using the blade that was intended to end her life, she carved two more words above the one already there.
I have.

Marcellina had a man living in the cellar, a man running from the Germans in black. Half the village concealed the fact from the other half, and especially from the curate’s governess, with her fear of the old religion. For the man dealt in curses and philters.

Ko’s father returned to the village with a string of mouthwater glimmering on his beard and a mad glee in his eyes.

“Little people,” he told Ko. “In the forest.” He rubbed his belly, bit his underlip and nodded.
Ko went ahhh.

“They build houses now,” said father. “We wait.”

The Challenge

Flash Fiction: Fisher-Price, My First Spaceship

Burning Starship With Landing Gears Out

Odalis walloped a big shiny sphere with her mallet.  She was annoyed by the flashing yellow lights connect to the sphere via an intricate network of heavy-gauged, metal-mesh-shielded cables.  The yellow lights winced ever so slighly with each wallop.  The Floppy Dongle, a ship intended for cargo hauls and extended travel, started to rattle slightly.

“I don’t think that will fix it,” Tom commented with quite a bit of snark.

“What would you know, pencil pusher?” asked Odalis, arms crossed in a challenging pose.

Odalis continued to show the sphere who the boss was.  This time, her banging was harder and more frequent.  Tom sat, legs crossed as he sat on a crate full of spare parts.  His eyes were squinted towards Odalis in a pensive, judgemental gaze.  His coy smile was inviting to a swift punch or at least a sneaky spitball.

“Weeeelllll…  I know enough to say this starship and your crew is not up to spec, and you know what that means: you have limited access to UNDSA sectors.”

Shane barged in with his usual wide-stanced penguin waddle.  Unlike Odalis, Shane had no tool belt or high-tech aides handy.  He preferred to travel “light”.

Shane blurted out, “You know, your body looks mighty nice with all that sweat glistening.”
