Save Or Shave The Beard? #SaveOrShave #SaveObiBeard #ShaveObiBeard

To shave the beard or to save the beard?

THAT is the question.

Hey everyone ObioneX2 back again!  It’s here..  It’s time to decide my fate: save or shave The Beard.

The Beard means alot to me and really want to keep it but my wife, Fefela, really wants it gone.  What do you guys think?  Vote will your wallet!

…Well, you don’t have to vote with your wallet but it helps.  After the poll, I’ll share how scoring will work.

(If the poll does not display properly, try this link – http://poll.fm/5erz7)

Optional:

The poll will be open throughout October and possibly into #Movember, which would be ironic if I do end up having to get rid of the beard.  (Yogi:  We found a loophole.. You can keep the mustache so that still counts for Movember!)  Here is how points will be counted:

  • Vote on PollDaddy = 1 point
  • Click on Save/Shave Beard Links = 5 points
  • Donations to Save/Save = 10 points*
  • Wishlist Purchase = 15 points*

*Must include in donation note which one you support (save or shave).

Here is our old poll, already in progress!  This one may be counted in the event of a tie.  http://www.easypolls.net/poll.html?p=55f1cb6be4b0c3d16faab68e

We Need YOU! Another 48-Hour Live Stream #TheGANG #Anime #Halloween #Cosplay #SupportSmallerStreams

Hey GANG, Obi “The Beard” here!

It’s 48-hour live stream time guys.  Well, it will be soon enough.  Our last over 60-hour stream marathon was a huge hit and we want to do more fun events like this..  Of course, we need your help!

Our very first GeekyAntics stream marathon lasted almost 72 hours – CRAZY!

We need streamers from #TheGANG stream team to help with the 48-hour live stream over at http://www.twitch.tv/geekyantics – it’ll be fun and productive!  If you are interested please message me on obionex2@geekyantics.net or Yogi on yogizilla@geekyantics.net – the more, the merrier.  You can also come hang with and message us on TeamSpeak:

promethium.typefrag.com:5015

sonic_the_hedgehog_inuyasha_anime_party__by_shinaishadow-d5pmk6d

Time and date is yet to be announced, though we are aiming for late October.  If we can do it in time for Halloween, we’re hoping to have some horror and cosplay themes, too!

Of course, it all depends on the response we get.  Keep in mind that, while we don’t have a huge following on Twitch, our audience is highly-engaged so this is a great way to help build each other up.  Self-promotion is totally allowed and encouraged!

Yogi Says: Absolutely!  With a stream team or network, you get out of it what you put in.  If everyone cross-promotes and streams to our channel once a week, we’d all see exponential results.  The model is proven but we need participation and PASSION.  Don’t be shy!

Thank you everyone!

~Obionex2

P.S.  Expect lots of anime talk when Yogizilla and F8TL_Blades stream.  Maybe we can get Morganafreya, Cupcakenoms, and Cupcakeeenvy, and JanelNo5 in on the fun (and, by “fun”, we’re talking anime and cosplay, of course).  w00t!!!halloween-bw-black-orange-undies-wallpaper_1920x1080

DadsOfDestiny Cystic Fibrosis Charity Stream – In Memory Of Josh Stokell

BreatheEasy_Banner-300x69

One of the greatest tragedies of the human condition is that great people are only remembered when they pass away.  Look back to any of the greatest artists, inventors, humanitarians, etc.  They were all celebrated well after their death, not during their life.  The recently departed Josh Stokell seems to be an exception to this and the tragedy here is that he was taken away from us at such a young age.  Guardian down…

josh-stokell-1979-2015-fallen-guardian

Josh fought against cystic fibrosis well over 30 years and dedicated his life to developing treatment and, ultimately, a cure.  Sadly, Josh lost his battle but not until he made great strides both in microbiology and gaming.  I did not know Josh personally but, from what I gather, he was greatly appreciated during his relatively short time on earth.  Hearing his Dads Of Destiny clanmates share war stories and anecdotes about their Destiny adventures with this beloved fallen Guardian brings a smile to my face because I realize Josh lived a fuller life than most people do going into their 80s and 90s.

The story of this everyday hero hits home for me because Josh was my age before leaving us.  It seems like, everywhere I turn, people are affected by cancer, fibromyalgia, and cystic fibrosis.  You rarely hear about how people affected by chronic or terminal illness cope with it and live purposeful lives.  When you’re ridden with disease and ailments, it’s easy to be bitter but I hear nothing but good things about Josh.  He was passionate about his work, Destiny, and people as a whole.

josh-stokell-1979-2015-fallen-guardian-bitter-beer-face

The DadsOfDestiny have teamed up with several streamers and promoters to host a 48-hour streaming event.  The Breathe Easy charity stream is happening right now.  The goal is to continue Josh Stokell’s work to fight cystic fibrosis.  They’ve raised a good bit of money so far but, more importantly, they’ve raised awareness of this terrible condition.  The Destiny community has really rallied and even Bungie has supported the effort with codes and social media marketing.

The GANG Minute: 24 Hour Emergency Fundraising Stream

So many great things are going on with the GeekyAntics network.  We’re hitting the front page on web searches, new friends are joining the community every day, potential sponsors are inquiring about our services and advertising deals, and we are attracting awesome special guests like our friends from AM Audio Media (creators of the Doctor Who “Dark Journey” radio drama).  I’m so happy to see people excited about our vision and fresh take on geeky content.

Unfortunately, I can’t celebrate all these wonderful things as my family is going through a really tough time.  My wife’s health is poor, I’m not doing too hot, and unexpected bills keep piling up.  I know everyone has problems and I’m not seeking pitty but, in simple terms, if we don’t raise the funds by Thursday, February 26th, the lights will be cut.  The details are below in my personal vlog on YouTube:

I’ll be doing a 24-hour stream on Monday, February 23rd starting sometime in the evening (can’t set a specific time because of something stupid Twitch did – details to follow).  Some of The GANG will be teaming up with me so we can raise funds and have some fun playing random games.  We’ll be focusing on indie and deckbuilding games including Speedrunners, Lethal League, SolForge, Hearthstone, and Dungeon Of The Endless.  There might be some League Of Legends, Smite, and Heroes Of The Storm (if this backup streaming PC can handle it)!

Mini Zombie Photo Journal: #WalkerStalkerCon #Atlanta 2014 | #TWTT #HorsePLAY

UPDATE:  Had some tech issues.  All sorted out now.  This was supposed to be a early morning piece.  My bad!

Day One of Walker Stalker Con was pretty darn awesome.  It’s already almost time to head back but here are some quick highlights.  I apologize in advance for some of the crappy photos but, hey, it’s something!

IMG_20141017_131131

Eric and James of The Walker Stalkers podcast kicked off the event sharing a brief history of the event.  It’s hard to believe it hasn’t even been two years since WSC started.

They discussed how the event started as a simple fan meetup.  The expected turnout was 1K but, instead, over 10K people showed up.  This year, they are expecting over 50K at the event.  Their growth has been amazing and inspiring!  This reminds us that podcasts are still ripe opportunities.

20141017_132529

Walker Stalkers LIVE reminded us that this is a true fan event.  Eric and James offered General Admissions attendees a chance at a free VIP upgrade by playing The Walking Dead Family Feud.  It was awesome seeing old TWD cast members sitting right there with the fans.  The energy and wit the actors brought was refreshing and it really set the tone for the event.  This is huge considering Dania, a.k.a. Michonne, cancelled at the very last minute and other issues overshadowed Day One.  To that I say “shame on you” to the managers and agents who failed to see the importance of this event.

20141017_131839

Lots of great surveys were featured in this game of Family Feud.  The big one is shown above, when contestants were asked, “What are the biggest threats in The Walking Dead?”  Sadly, spoiled food and squirrels did not make the board.  Doh.

20141017_134137

The main panel room on the 3rd floor of AmericasMart building 2 is huge.  There is not much scheduled in the space, which is a shame, but the setup is nice.  Great lighting and set pieces.  This event space in Atlanta is impressive and spacious, yet it’s not overwhelming like, say, Jacob Javits Center in NYC.  There is a certain warmth here.

20141017_141321

The next panel I caught was Emory University’s Zombie Ethics discussion.  They went deep on the allure of The Walking Dead and what defines ethics under normal or apocalyptic circumstances.  Are zombies sentient enough to be subject to ethics ?  Is mistreatment of zombies animal cruelty?  Does choice and free will determine the responsibility of ethics?   I really enjoyed the discussion so expect a write-up on it.  There were audio issues but the presenters and experts were wonderful so I stuck around for the whole thing.

Bloo Needs Your Help! #AnimalRescue #Crowdfunding #RealTalk

Geeks, gamers, friends, family, wholehearted GANG supporters..  It’s time for some #RealTalk.  I have an urgent message:  I need you (and I do not say that lightly)!

I am not one to ask for hand-outs or “sell out”. I try to avoid excessive monetization of content because it can detract from the message and overall experience… But I realize things do not happen unless you ask.  Here I am asking humbly and wholeheartedly:

I need your help. Bloo needs your help.  If you’re ready to donate right away to help a precious little life, here is the widget.  You can also use the ImRaising donation page.

…This Is Bloo:

CAM00052
20140727_174637
20140922_125646
20140817_125239

Bloo is the GANG mascot but that makes light of our relationship.  She is one of my dearest friends and family members. Some may find this weird but I feel a strong bond towards this creature of God. Of course, I love my family but Bloo is a helpless creature.. And she is not doing well.

Bloo is one of the many animal rescues we have nursed back to health.  She was left to fend for herself inside a mailbox in our community.  Every month I encounter two or three stories like this.  It angers me that people can be so careless, heartless, and just plain EVIL.  Usually, we help abandoned pets recover and find them loving homes with responsible families. I have grown particularly attached to this lil gal. That is why it hurts me to know that the rough patch we have hit prevents me from taking her to the vet now that she could really use a good check-up, just to be safe.

What’s Wrong With Bloo?

Well, it seems like it is just a sprained leg or, at worst, a dislocated hip. The pet community has been reassuring but most pet lovers have told me what I already know: “Take her to a vet already!”   It seems others have encountered similar symptoms with no complications but seeing Bloo hobble along and struggle with basic functions.. It hurts me deeply.

I am choking back tears as I write this.  Those that know me on a very personal level know that, when I let someone in, I love you fully.. without hesitation.

I am not a proud person but I feel like such a scrub for not being able to provide for my family fully right now. Between unexpected car repairs, increases in utility costs, and other bills, money is being spent faster than I can make it right now. Many of you have donated in countless ways without my asking. I truly appreciate that.. but now I must ask for more..  Just a bit more.

Why #GamerGate Doesn’t Really Matter – Let’s Just Enjoy Games!

In recent months, you could not even peek at a social media stream without catching talk about feminism, offensive video game tropes, journalists selling out, and inauthentic game reviews. That was just the tip of the iceberg. All these things culminated in what is affectionately (not really) called GamerGate.

Do not confuse #GamerGate with #GamersGate – they are two VERY different things!

DISCLAIMER: Though this always applies to myself and our independent contributors here on the network, let me reiterate that the opinions expressed here are not those of our partners, affiliates, team members, and the network as a whole.

GamerGate went beyond the issues of feminism, alleged “sex scandals”, and the need for reformation in the gaming industry as a whole. It is culmination of the desperate outcry of gamers, consumers, and even industry professionals who are tired of the BS. We feel cheated, used, underappreciated, and deceived. Those feelings were sadly focused into fear of change, finger-pointing, dirt-slinging, and other petty drama.

Many attribute the GamerGate fallout to the Zoe Quinn debacle.  I won’t re-hash the whole thing but it sure got ugly.  Certainly, there are double standards when it comes to adult relationships but people sure LOVE jumping to extreme conclusions.  The trolling was real.  Heck, the whole thing went beyond trolling..  Hacking, Total Biscuit, Phil Fish, and more craziness got thrown into the mix!

I would say the breaking point really came thanks to Anita Sarkeesian.  Her web series, Feminist Frequency, may have served as a catalyst to the turmoil and resentment.  Opponents felt she was merely playing the self-righteous role (i.e. #SJW, Social Justice Warrior) to draw attention to herself.  The reality is that all the debate and angst came from tension long in the making, through no fault of her own or any specific parties.

I do not wish to downplay the personal attacks Anita got for speaking to issues she feels are important. Discrimination and objectification are very real things in any medium or industry, not just video games. That said, there are deeper issues here that the PC (political correctness) police are tucking away in favor of their own agendas. Right or wrong, it feels like the outspoken few are holding on to their own biases and skewed worldviews.

Let me be clear: it is wonderful and worthwhile for folks like Anita Sarkeesian to encourage perspectives that focus on the artistry and social issues driving or driven by video games. It’s equally important to remember to have fun and not assume every creative work is ridden with offensive material or tropes. It’s easy to find issues when you dig deep but is that really what we should be expending our energy on? More importantly, women should not aim to be the equals of men.. That is setting your sights too low. I kid, I kid.

The core issue here is one of trust, not social hierarchy or constructs. Even for more casual gamers, there is a substantial investment of time and money which we all feel justifies our serving as keepers or critics of our gaming hobby or lifestyle. The dissatisfaction and distrust with gaming journalism is a reflection of the course corrections we are seeing in social media, communication, and business [ethics] as a whole.
